Telegraph reports several police and crime commissioners (PCCs) have argued proposals to merge forces in England and Wales would be costly for taxpayers and disruptive to local community policing. Meanwhile, several chief officers have expressed support for the plans to create fewer, larger forces.

ITV reports on comments by the family of murdered Henry Nowak, who have criticised attempts to politicise his murder and condemned the violent disorder that followed the release of police body-worn footage.

BBC reports that policing minister, Sarah Jones, has outlined government plans to introduce legislation governing police use of live facial recognition (LFR). The new laws would aim to provide consistency in the use of LFR, with independent oversight and safeguards to ensure it is used proportionately. The Home Office has also said a new code of practice would be developed for police. Al Murray, Director of PoliceAI, said:

“Facial recognition technology is one of a number of proven capabilities that can help policing work more effectively to keep the public safe. Used responsibly, technologies like this can help officers identify wanted offenders more quickly, make better use of available information and focus more time on protecting victims and communities.

“The benefits of technology adoption are greatest when innovation is matched by strong safeguards, transparency and public accountability. We welcome the government’s commitment to providing a clearer framework for the use of facial recognition, helping forces adopt technology consistently, responsibly and with the confidence of the public they serve.”

BBC reports on the planned public order operation in Scotland to manage potential Bonfire Night disorder, a football match and possible protests. Officers will be based at fire stations and travel with fire service crews, with mutual aid being provided from 18 English and Welsh forces.

BBC reports that two former Northamptonshire Police officers have been found guilty of gross misconduct after entering into a sexual relationship while one was acting as the other’s tutor.
